best phone call surprise of my life!

some of you may know that i have a very best friend, cortney, serving a LDS mission. he is serving in the louisville kentucky mission for our church. (i call him corters for short. people tease him for having a girl name, so i use my nickname for him). what these missionaries do is go to a designated area all around the around and share the gospel of Christ. Not only do they share the gospel, but they give service and dedicate themselves fully to God. most missionaries will go when they are 19 or 20 if they are a boy, and 21 if they are a girl. these boys and ladie's leave their families behind, pack very light, and focus on the work. they are allowed to talk on the phone with their families twice a year (Christmas and Mother's Day), and email and write letters once a week. boys serve for 2 years with a possible extension if they choose -- girls go for 18 months, also with a possible extension if they choose.

last night we had just gotten home from dinner with Harvey, Hollie, James, Nola, and Grandma & Grandpa Jackson. I was just finishing a brief conversation with my friend danica in colorado when another phone call was coming in from a number i didn't recognize and an area code that i did not recognize.

sidenote: i do not answer numbers i do not recognize. i always let them roll to voicemail, so me even considering answering this phonecall was odd.

i answered the phone with a skeptical, "hello.."
the voice on the other end says, "oh my.. andrea (and then my last name)"
and my reply, "hi...sorry i don't know who this is..."
(wait for it) "it's your favorite missionary."
oh my frrrrreaking heck! i was so super shocked. i wanted to run up and down the street squealing and i wanted to cry at the same time. i couldn't even think of what to say because i was so surprised! i said, "you need to tell me a story because i can't even think right now!" so he proceeds to tell me a story while i silently cry and wrap my head around the fact that i am talking to one of my very best friends that i haven't spoken to since christmas of 2009!
our conversation was great! we talked from 8 pm until almost 10:30. we talked about cafe rio, costa vida, friends and where they are now, our families, music and movies i need to catch him up on, and we bounced in and out of spiritual discussion also. it felt SO good! i have really missed him - especially the past few months. we both kept saying how much we missed each other and all the things we are going to do when he gets home.
it was the best surprise i could have ever asked to get. it was the best mother's day...and i'm not even a mother! ha!
i love cortney so much. not in a "i want to date, marry and have your babies" kind of way. and it isn't, "i love your like i love my brother." we have a genuine "i love you friend" relationship. it was so wonderful to talk to him yesterday. i am excited for june 25th when he will be home and i can see and hug him! i hope all other missionaries that got to call their mom's enjoyed their day because i know their mom's and families did for sure. :)

(p.s. my mother's day post is coming. i am still trying to get my laptop to connect to the internet at my new house..)

Ah That is so exciting!! It is awesome that he got to call you! I can't even imagine, but I think I'm going to start knowing how it is to miss your best friend on a mission, cause mine is going to be leaving soon, along with like all my other friends. I have farewells every week from now until like the middle of June! It is so crazy. Anyways, this is random, but I hope that you have an awesome day! :)

So fun for you! And even if you are not into dating him now... Things change a lot in two years :)
